{"id":105,"date":"2022-04-28T11:46:41","date_gmt":"2022-04-28T11:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/redrideraz.com\/2022\/?p=105"},"modified":"2024-05-14T12:12:54","modified_gmt":"2024-05-14T12:12:54","slug":"day-four-oklahoma-city-ok","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redrideraz.com\/2022\/2022\/04\/28\/day-four-oklahoma-city-ok\/","title":{"rendered":"Day Four &#8211; Oklahoma City, OK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some days are travel days where the main objective is Point B. \u00a0Today was one of those days. \u00a0That&#8217;s really a good thing because I&#8217;ve been this way before and you have to look long and hard for interesting stuff to see and do around these parts.<\/p>\n<p>As y&#8217;all know I really try to stay off the interstate. \u00a0But this morning I was actually looking forward to it &#8211; just a little. \u00a0You see, I&#8217;ve been fighting a pretty decent wind out of the west for the last couple days and this morning that wind would be to my back &#8211; how nice. \u00a0You can really eat up some miles at 85 mph and the 120 miles from Tucumcari to Amarillo seemed like a blink in time. \u00a0Of course, I don&#8217;t remember anything about it because it was an uneventful blink in time.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not <strong><em>quite<\/em><\/strong> true, I do recall that about 40 miles out of Amarillo, my tail wind turned into a strong cross wind outta the south. \u00a0And, it stayed that way all the way to OKC. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been through here several times and can&#8217;t really recall any time that the wind hasn&#8217;t been strong out of the south. \u00a0Oh, well &#8211; just a travel day at least I&#8217;m not getting wet to boot!!<\/p>\n<p>Just east of Amarillo I got off the slab. \u00a0You can still make really good time on the Texas back roads &#8211; the speed limit on the two lane I was on was still 75. \u00a0But I had an issue; the zipper from a new light jacket I got was poking me in the neck and face. \u00a0I was ready to put the knife to it. \u00a0Then I thought, maybe I could find a saddle shop and they could install a couple snaps to hold the collar down. \u00a0Ray&#8217;s Boot and Saddle Repair in Elk City, OK got &#8216;er done. \u00a0One less constant minor irritation to put up with &#8211; VERY happy about that.<\/p>\n<p>I am truly blessed to have such great friends here in Oklahoma City. \u00a0I&#8217;ve known Bert for over 40 years and it&#8217;s always good to see him and his family. \u00a0Not long after I got here, it was time to get something to eat. \u00a0In Oklahoma City &#8220;eating local&#8221; means steak, and THE place for steak is Cattleman&#8217;s Restaurant down in the Stockyards part of town.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redrideraz.com\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/IMG_7664.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-116\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redrideraz.com\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/IMG_7664.jpg?resize=584%2C363&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redrideraz.com\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/IMG_7664.jpg?resize=1024%2C637&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redrideraz.com\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/IMG_7664.jpg?resize=300%2C186&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redrideraz.com\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/IMG_7664.jpg?resize=768%2C477&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redrideraz.com\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/IMG_7664.jpg?resize=1536%2C955&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redrideraz.com\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/IMG_7664.jpg?resize=483%2C300&amp;ssl=1 483w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redrideraz.com\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/IMG_7664.jpg?w=2048&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redrideraz.com\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/IMG_7664.jpg?w=1168&amp;ssl=1 1168w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/redrideraz.com\/2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/IMG_7664.jpg?w=1752&amp;ssl=1 1752w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the real star of the show, are the lamb fries. \u00a0Come on, you know you wanna try &#8217;em. \u00a0They are deep fried and served with <em>cocktail<\/em> sauce. \u00a0There&#8217;s a joke in there somewhere&#8230;. The steak comes from the spine of the cow, but is difficult to see that when it&#8217;s on your plate. This illustration might help:<\/p>\n<div class=\"questionPageLeft floatLeft\">\n<div class=\"answers\">\n<div id=\"497449\" class=\"answer\">\n<div class=\"hidesWhenAnswerEditing\">\n<div class=\"answerContainer clearfix\">\n<div class=\"answerDescription\">\n<div class=\"markdown\">\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nosetotailapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/cow_t_bone_joined.png?w=584\" alt=\"nosetotailapp.com\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a view from the nose to the tail looking down the backbone. \u00a0Typically a T-Bone is quite far down the cow and would be cut from the short loin. \u00a0The Porterhouse Steak is a really big T-Bone with a larger piece of tenderloin &#8211; from just behind the short loin area.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/5\/5b\/BeefCutShortLoinTenderloin.svg\/1200px-BeefCutShortLoinTenderloin.svg.png\" alt=\"upload.wikimedia.org\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What? \u00a0Well, it goes back to the Land Run (Oklahoma Land Grab) of 1889. \u00a0The rules were:\u00a0&#8220;no person should be permitted to enter upon and occupy the land before the time designated in the president&#8217;s opening proclamation and that anyone who violated the provision would be denied a right to the land.&#8221; \u00a0You were supposed to be waiting at the state (territory) line and at the designated time &#8211; the race was on to stake your claim. \u00a0The folks already waiting in the weeds, inside the borders, to pop out at the designated time were called sooners. \u00a0As you can imagine, early legal settlers of Oklahoma Territory held a very low opinion of sooners. That began to change in 1908 when the University of Oklahoma adopted the name for its football team. By the 1920s the term no longer carried a negative connotation, and Oklahomans adopted the nickname as a badge of pride.
